I am Professor of Film at the University of Notre Dame. I have Concurrent appointments in American Studies and Gender Studies. I was Director of Gender Studies from Fall 2009 to Spring 2015. I have been at Notre Dame since 1998. Before that, I taught for three years at the University of Newcastle, Australia. I received my M.A. and PhD in English from the University of Chicago. I got my B.A. in English at Wellesley College in 1986.
My research and teaching deals primarily with American popular film. I approach film via feminism, and consider issues of gender, genre, performance, spectatorship, and urbanism. I have written extensively about stars, film acting, and feminist camp, as well as popular music in film, the urban, and the child in cinema.
I am President Elect of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) until July 1, 2017 when I will be President. Previously, I was on the Executive Board for SCMS from 2011-2014. I am an organizing member of the Chicago Film Seminar.
I live in Chicago with my husband and two kids.
